Local information about St Neots
So what do we have for the locals then...
Well I'll start with Pub's and the Crown to Town legacy.
Someone needs to write about this because it should be part of every young mans ambition to visit St Neots and attempt the Crown to Town pub crawl.
At present I think it's 13 pubs before you get into the town centre. A drink in each, a pint in each is considered 'manning up' for the team. A
short in each is pretty suicidal and if you're on a kamakazee mission consider that there's probably another six or seven pubs once you reach town.
Thinking about it maybe this should be in the extreme section, anyway onto some highlights.
Along the route
The Crown - The starting point for the adventure. A nice oldy worldy pub/restaurant really. Not really a local scene because of the distance from
Eaton Socon and the adjacent Travel Inn. You really want to be arriving before mid-day if you're going to stand a chance of getting through the
challenge of crown to town in one piece.
The Rivermill - Out and out I would say probably the best pub in St Neots. It's pretty beautiful. A really old building with picnic benches overlooking
the river. Live music three times a week and a quiz night on a Sunday where they round up all the Mensa members to humiliate you. The band play
regular open mic nights on a Tuesday.
The Old Sun - Only a stones throw from the Rivermill but we probably go here
more than anywhere. A great place to watch football or drop into for a pint after
work. It's got that proper pub feel about with the comfortable, not too posh
atmosphere. The kind of place you wouldn't think twice
about popping in for a quick one with friend covered in oil after a hard day
at work. Also worth mentioning is the pizza, there's a pizza delivery place next
door and they serve it in the bar too. Freshly made dough combined with way too
much mozzarella makes for great treat midway through
the crown to town experience. To be fair you'll probably need to sober up a bit
by the time you get here.
Town - OK so you've made it, hopefully not embarrassed your self too much, there's
plenty of time for that later with the inevitable boogy shapes thrown to the
Priories dance floor. Hit corner house for a relaxed atmosphere and nice surroundings. Nb.
Try the banana beer they sell here.
Probably not what you need on a Crown to Town but pretty tasty.
A new addition, or new ownership at least is the Pig and Falcon, I wish I lived closer to this pub. You walk in and there's a black board above
the bar with about ten beer mats and tasting notes pinned up of what they are currently serving.
Final thoughts, eat well along the way and have barroca ready for the morning. You're going to need it. Good luck!
